Description:
A small sparrow, resembling house sparrow, but lacks grey mantle with yellowish tones and more vibrant. Male lacks black cheek-patch; has bright chestnut mantle and yellowish wash to underparts. Female has prominent supercilium and dark eye-stripe, rufous-brown scapulars and rump, and yellowish wash to underparts.
Distribution:
Common resident and summer visitor in the southern parts of Diamer and Astore districts. Occupies light woodland, terrace cultivation around edges of villages, open forest, forest edges and montane, from 1000m to 4300m.
Behavior:
Obtains insect items by searching leaves and, to lesser extent, by seizing them in flight. Collects in large flocks in winter to feed on spilt grain and weed seeds in stubbles of cultivated fields. Eats principally seeds, including those of cultivated cereals, also small berries.
